Hola mis queridos :)

Wow wow WOW!  Have I got a ton of news!  We are having a baptism this Saturday!!!!!! So last Monday we got a call from a member who lives in Gran Canaria, another island.  (Just so you know, all of the islands became a stake last year which was an incredible thing here, so the fact that it´s a stake is huge!)  So, last last sunday was stake conference. This lady, Raquel calls us and tells us that her really good friend (Carmen) came to stake conference with her....like she actually flew over to the other island to go to stake conference to see Raquel´s husband receive the priesthood during stake conference.  Raquel obviously had been talking to Carmen about how important this was for her husband and so she invited Carmen to come and she totally came.  She went to an entire different island just to be there to support them!  So....while there, Carmen´s heart was touched.  After the meeting was over, she told Raquel that she just knew she had to be baptized into this church.  She felt the spirit and knew that what they were saying was true.  So, having said that to Raquel, she literally started inviting all of the people she knew there to her baptism, that she said would be in a month!!!!  And she asked Raquel´s husband to be the one to baptize her now that he has the priesthood.  So, Raquel (being a member of the church for a long time now) knew that she needed to hook Carmen up with the missionaries to get her prepared to be baptized!  So, Raquel found our number and called us and told us that she had a friend who wanted to be baptized....and well....we were ECSTATIC! CLARO!

So, we called her and met with her for the first time last Wednesday!  She is this super hilarious quirky 69 year old single lady who looks like she´s only 50.  She´s from Venezuela, she cares for children, when we met her she was watching 3 kids (one being only a few months old).  She is just the most loving, happy lady you´ll ever meet.  We got to know her for a bit, and then talked about prayer and our relationship with god for awhile, and then didn´t have much time to teach her anything else, but we set a goal for her to be baptized THIS UPCOMING SATURDAY!  Because her friends Raquel and her husband live in Gran Canaria and she lives here, we had to schedule a time that would work for them to come over to this island so that Raquel´s husband (I think his name is Frank) could baptize her.  This weekend was the only one that worked for them because Frank is leaving for Venezuela in the beginning of May and they couldn´t come any other weekend before then.  SOOOO....if all goes well, which we think it will, WE´RE HAVING A BAPTISM THIS SATURDAY!!!!!!!!!  She came to church on Sunday...and (also...other side note) she has been familiar with the church for the past 34 years of her life, has talked with hermanas when she was in Venezuela and has just always happen to make friends who are members!  She also had been coming to the Los Cristianos church here for a while a long time ago, but then stopped coming, so she actually knows quite a few people!  She is SOOOO Adorable!  She actually reminds me of Marta Lalliss!  She is a Venezuelan version of Marta!  She is full of life, LOVES to talk and is SO friendly and warm and SO dang cute!  Anyway...one of the bishop´s counselors (Hermano Cena who is the sweetest old Italian man in the world) invited us missionaries over to his house to eat after church and he invited her to come along too.  She was SO excited!  Bishop Beccececi came too to get to know her better and it was just SO good and SO fun!  I loved being in Hermano Cena´s house.  He is a special person, with an incredible spirit about him.  He also gave US the spiritual thought afterwards because he loves to teach :)  It was like being at home at his house, there was just a sweet spirit of love in his home.  We ate in the backyard in the shade in his little garden and he made us homemade italian pizza and this AMAZING tarta de manzana (apple cake).  It was a really good day.  There were also so many little miracles that happened at church, we were able to talk with and get to know people (Menos Activos-less actives) better that we´ve been wanting to get to know better and there were just so many little things that were so good that happened yesterday.  Heavenly Father is good :)

So, back to Carmen....the ONLY thing that could potentially be a problem is that she drinks coffee.  She actually brought it up last minute (so we know that Raquel has talked with her about it) and we didn´t have time to go over the Word of Wisdom with her officially so tonight we´re going over there and going over the commandments.  She has expressed to us over and over again that there´s alot that she doesn´t understand but that she knows that she needs to learn and that she is willing to do the things she needs to do in order to prepare.  SO tonight she´s gonna be learning about the Word of Wisdom :)  We are praying that she will be willing to commit to keep this commandment and that all will go well.  We feel rushed teaching her so many things so quickly, but at the same time, she knows alot about the church already.  She´s heard of these principles of the Gospel from her friend Raquel, but just hasn´t understood the importance of or known how to apply these principles to herself, so we are helping her to make these commitments to live according to these principles.  To make a covenant (especially your baptismal covenant) a person has to know how to make and keep commitments or else they won´t know how to keep a covenant :)  We are just SOO excited and hope that all goes well this week in preparation for her baptism!

So...other BIG news....Hermana Shurtz and I went to a FLAMENCO show!! We´re allowed one culture event during our entire mission and so well, we thought it was time :) Ok....I thought Irish dancing was amazing.  Flamenco dancing is SO impressive.  There is actually more foot work involved than I thought!  It made me want to dance!  It was incredible and me and hermana shurtz´s jaws were dropped the entire time!  Mom, Dad....if you can, you HAVE to go see a live Flamenco show when we´re in Sevilla.  It is amazing.

Well, General Conference is this weekend and I am SOOO excited!  The baptism is scheduled for after the session we´ll watch on Saturday afternoon, so it is going to be SO powerful to have everyone here watching conference and then ending it with a baptism!  We are really looking forward to it.

Hermanas at the Flamenco Show
I know that this is the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ, that God communicates with his children on the earth through a living prophet, Thomas S. Monson, that the Savior lives and that if we live according to his teachings and the principles of the Gospel we will improve the quality of our lives and be truly happy.  Life´s struggles still come, that is inevitable.  But having an understanding and testimony of the Atoning power of the Savior changes us and gives us the peace and comfort that we often times desperately need.  The Lord knows us, and loves us.  He is our Father and for that we all have the ability to receive revelation from him personally and through his chosen, authorized servants.  I know that he wants to bless us and he wants us to be happy.  I know that as you listen to conference with a heart to understand and ears to hear that the Lord will bless you and give you the answers you need.  I am grateful for the love that we feel from our Father in Heaven.

I hope you all have the best day and week ever!  I love yáll :)

Ok....so did you know that there is a tradition in Columbia where the person who´s birthday it is, gets egged and floured?  And well....the majority of the people here that aren´t Italian or tourists, are Columbian, Venezuelan and Cuban.  So, guess who got egged and floured on there birthday?  Yes, I did.  It was...CRAZY!  Some recent converts, Carolina and Christian (Columbians) invited us over to have a little party and well they whipped out the eggs and the flour at the end!  It was probably the most memorable birthday I´ll ever have haha!  I had a great day!  We had eaten with the Italians, Ana and Mario, earlier during medio dia which was super good!  She made me cheesecake....and on top of that, my companion had actually made me cheesecake too!  haha!  I got 2 cheesecakes!  Later we passed by bishop´s house.  We teach English lessons to Bishop´s wife, Ani, and she had made me cupcakes!!  She is the cutest....Aubs, I thought of you, her cupcakes were super cute just like yours.  Her son, Gabriel took a picture with me:)  He´s the sweetest little boy ever.  And then later on, we ended up at Carolina and Christian´s and I got egged and floured!  Great day :)

Also, recently there have been a few tourists coming in for church that we get to translate for!  Last week I met this lady from England named Joy.  Oh my she was adorable!  They just use some really funny lingo that is so hilarious!  I wonder what it would be like to serve there!  She told me that her husband had passed away and that she just wanted to pass away to be with him, it was sad, but then she was so funny at the same time because she was like (think of a british accent saying this haha), "So, I just want to die to be with my husband, but the other day I received a revelation from God and I became rather cross.  He told me that I couldn´t die yet until I had helped someone understand the scriptures!"  She was a hoot!  But, it was really sweet to hear her sweet testimony of the scriptures and how she is actually now sharing her knowledge of the scriptures with one of her grandchildren who isn´t a member :)  Heavenly Father is so good.  There are so many little things that he does every day to help us, and most of the time we just can´t see those little things because we´re looking for the big things :)  That lady just made my day.  Then the next Sunday, yesterday there were some people from Ireland, Scotland and Germany who came!  I´m just loving meeting so many foreigners!  I love hearing their accents!

So, today has been a really great day!  A really nice Columbian lady in our ward told us the other day that she wanted to pay for us to go and get a pedicure on our p-day, so I got a pedicure today!!  We felt so spoiled it was so fun!  First one I´ve ever had in my life!  Mom...if you haven´t ever gotten one, you should go sometime!  You would love it!  Anyway, so that was pretty much all the excitement for today:)  And this week......this is exciting news....we are allowed one culture activity during our entire mission (whether it be a REAL madrid game, a bull fight, etc..) so there´s this really cool flamenco dancing show that we found out was here and me and my companion haven´t had our culture activity yet, so we´re going to go this Wednesday!  We are super excited!!!!!!

So funny note about the Spanish culture...I think I´ve told you this before, but in case you didn´t know...they are VERY dramatic people!  Like...REALLY dramatic!  Most of the time it is comical, but sometimes they really do live soap opera lives!  It´s just crazy.  For example, when they talk to you....even if they don´t know you, they immediately say things like, "Hola, mi reina, mi cielo, mi flor, mi cariño...etc." (Hello my queen, my heaven, my flower, my love, etc.) haha!  I´ve just noticed alot of Columbians saying that here alot lately and I think it´s so funny and so Latino!  Sometimes, you´ve gotta watch out for the creepers, but for the most part it´s just what they say and is a part of their culture to say things like that as terms of endearment.  It cracks me up :)

We had a really great JA´s activity here (Jovenes Adultos-Young Single Adults).  We did an egg drop and had them split up in teams to try and build something with a few materials they were given to protect an egg so that when we dropped it later, it wouldn´t break.  There were ALOT of people and they loved it and it was really unifying and wonderful!  There are some really incredible JAs here, returned missionaries who are helping strengthen these JAs members so much.  There are alot of JAs who need alot of help and friendship, so it was such a good activity to bring people together.

I am so grateful for the time I´m having here as a missionary.  It just makes me want to be a better member missionary at home more than ever!  We have such a responsibility to help people understand the knowledge we have.  I know we can´t do everything, but we should never under-estimate our faith in others and we need to always recognize that are faith does make a difference, no matter how small it may seem.

I love the Gospel with all of my heart!  I hope you all have the best week ever.  Thanks again for the birthday wishes!  I love you!!!!!!!!!
Happy Birthday to Hermana

Hola de las ISLAS!!!

Wow, what a WEEK!  This week has been sooo long, but it´s been good.  Right now in Los Cristianos donde nos encontramos (where we find ourselves) there is this big festivo called "Carnaval."  And, well....let´s just say that in Brazil is where you find the largest Carnaval celebration in the world and the missionaries there have to stay indoors during the 10 day´s worth of festivities....Las Gran Canarias is the 2nd largest Carnaval in the world and well, we´re here :)  And well, it´s like we live in Babylon!  There´s just a lot of partying and crazies!!  And they play super loud music till 2 in the morning right next to our house, so it´s been fun sleepin...haha :)  But, more than anything, seeing all of these crazy partiers makes me SO grateful for the Gospel, for the knowledge we have of what truly brings us lasting happiness and peace in life.  I know when we´re at home, especially growing up with the Gospel having been taught to us our whole lives, we are not tempted by drugs, drinking, and everything extreme like that.  We have lots of good influences around us the majority of the time if we choose to be surrounded by good.  But here, little teenage kids have so many tempations to be apart of these things because it´s just normal life here!  They are immune and desensitized to all of these really bad things and they don´t know any different.  It is sad to see it, but it strengthens my testimony of our living day prophet who truly guides and directs us so that we don´t have to look around us in the world searching for happiness...or what the world says brings us happiness.  God knows what brings us happiness and he´s given us the knowledge to know how to obtain that happiness...The Restored Gospel!!  Living according to the principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only way to be happy in life.  It really is that simple.  It requires effort on our part and requires us to take responsibility for our actions, but when we understand the gift of agency that God has given us, and we realize that taking responsibility in every area of our life to live according to the manner in which God would have us live (using our agency well to choose the good) that brings us far greater happiness and peace than any other thing in this world.

On a happier note....some really great things about the area:
1) My companion, Hermana Shurtz is WONDERFUL!  She´s from St. George Utah and is just full of life and is so fun...in case you can´t tell already :)  She´s great, we get along great and I´m loving working with her.  She actually told me she grew up being pretty less active, so the fact that she´s here is really incredible.  She can connect with people in a way that I can´t and I´m grateful that I have her to learn from right now.  She is wonderful :)
2) The ward here is wonderful.  I love them already. I don´t know them super well yet, but they are so strong and I´m looking forward to getting to know them more.  They have good hearts and have such strong faith and testimonies.  I feel so grateful to be here with them to serve here with them. This last week we had a big luncheon with all the relief society and it was so fun talking to so many of them and getting to know them.  There is one super sweet old lady from Uruguay!  I told her that my brother was serving there and she got all excited :)  She´s precious.  Her name is Elsa!  Also....Dev...there is another man in our ward from Uruguay and wow does he have personality or what!  Are all Uruguayians just super loud and have a ton of conviction?  Because this man does, he gave the best talk on Sunday and I loved it....especially thinking about the kind of people you are meeting and the kind of experiences you are having there in Uruguay :)
3) There are a TON of tourists here!  I know it´s Carnaval this week, but when I first got here there were alot too!  This is a big vacation spot for Europeans!
4) We have this Menos Activo lady, named Segrario who we are visiting.  She is Canarian and she´s is a HOOT!  I don´t know....Canarians...true Islanders who have never left the island in their entire life are crazy hilarious!  They talk so fast and there spanish is different, but it´s been really fun getting to know her.  Her husband has Alzheimers and so she can never come to the church like she would like to.  She has such a good heart and it´s been really fun getting to know her and help her.
5) Right now I´m finally finishing Jesus the Christ!  I´ve made a goal to finish it before I go home!  That book is incredible.  There is alot of information, but it has helped me understand more about the Savior´s life than I ever have learned.  The Book of Mormon bears powerful testimony of the Savior from the testimonies of the prophets.  This book doesn´t replace scripture, but it is such a powerful resource for learning more about the Savior´s life, the people of his time, the kinds of ideas of the people of the time, the things that he was faced with during his mortal minisitry, the reality of the tempations he faced, and is just jam packed with so much knowledge about so many details that I´ve never thought about before.  I love it.  Every day I read, I feel the spirit so strongly testify to me the reality of the Savior, what he did, and his role in our lives.  Christ was truly a master, a sinless and perfect being, yet living a mortal life.  I´m so excited to keep reading more and more.  I wish I could study for 8 hours every day!

We are so blessed.  I know that the study of the principles of the gospel improves behavior more than a study of behavior improves behavior.  I´ve seen that within myself and I see it in others.  Every problem we face in life can be remedied through our understanding of the gospel.  It doesn´t mean we can control the actions of others or that bad things will not happen to us, but our understanding of the gospel really does give us greater ability to confront every circumstance in our life with confidence in the Lord.

Hermana Shurtz and Hermana Carroll
I hope you all have the best week ever!  Thank you for the Birthday wishes!  Grandma and Grandpa, thank you so much for the birthday money you gave me!  That was so kind of you!!  I´ll definitely go buy myself something fun for my birthday here tomorrow :)  I love you all!  Have the best week ever!  I´m glad you finally got my package!!  Mom....your story about the little girl hugging you was so sweet.  I´m so happy for you and that you are seeing so many blessings from that opportunity to serve in Primary!

Love you all!!!

Oh WOW!  SOO much to contar!!  (To tell ya :)

I am on an island....literally an island.  It is SO cool!  In so many ways I feel like a brand new missionary all over again because this area is SO different than any other area I´ve been in and I feel like I´m a newbie learning all over again, but I love it..  It´s like a completely different mission down here.  Our area is literally the entire bottom half of Tenerife...the majority of the island!  Everything is sooo spread apart.  We visit so many different pueblos that all take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to get too!  It is so different.  You really have to plan your time out well because you spend the majority of your day in only one or two pueblos.  But, wow, I´m loving it!  The ward is wonderful.  A new bishop was recently called who is from Argentina and he and his family are the sweetest people.  I am really excited to get to know the members more!  They seem wonderful.  The only downer is that everything is so spread apart.  When your on the peninsula (Spain) you usually will have a big street to just contact on and the members within a specific area that isn´t too hard to find, but here....wow.  So different!  And most of the pueblos don´t have maps!  I´m sure that every mission in South America is probably like this haha :)  So, I have no room to complain, but it´s just so different here and i hope I can do everything I can here to be effective and use my time wisely.

So....a few CRAZY things about the islands just to start off...
1) We have to buy our own water....that´s crazy!  We buy big jugs of it and use it up for about 2 weeks and then have to buy more!
2) There are a TON of tourists!  Especially in Los Cristianos where we live.  Hay MUCHA gente!  The Canary Islands really are like the Hawaii of Europe.
3) The majority of our ward are Italians!  They come from the north of Italy where it´s cold and they retire here.  We eat with this cute old and retired Italian couple every Tuesday named Ana and Mario.  And they speak Spanish but with Italian accents, so everything is very emphasized....as if they were saying "MA-ma MI-a" all the time, but in spanish.  It´s so great.  So...this last week we had real italian lasagna....it was yummy!  I´m looking forward to more real italian food!
4) The Bus is called "the waa waa" haha!
5) The weather here is beautiful except for every couple of days the "calima" will hit....which means that the sands and winds from the Sahara desert are blown over here and it creates this bubble affect over the island and you can barely see the sun or the moon at night!  it´s crazy!  We´re breathing in the Sahara Desert!
6) There is a big thing here called "Carnaval" that is really bad....it´s a big holiday type celebration that they have all throughout spain and it tours around the country at different times...it´s in Los Cristianos right now so that´s been interesting.  There´s really loud music, lots of dancing, parades, and drinking going on until 5 in the morning!  Luckily we´ve been able to sleep pretty good because we´re sooo tired, but there´s lots of crazy music going on as we´re going to bed every night!  It´ll be going on for another week, so only one more week :)  Hallelujiah!
7) Also....not about the Islands....but REALLY cool news!  And probably sounds random....but you know Madaii and Vivian, right?  The Recent Converts from Cuba....and you remember Victor Brun who I was telling you about that has recently been coming back to church and re-activating himself....Him and Madaii....I think are starting to date!!!  Ahhh!!!  One thing has just been leading to another and we were completely staying out of it, but the hermanas just called me and told me that things have been going really well!!!!  Do you KNOW how COOL it would be if they really GOT MARRIED!!!  They could get sealed and everything in the temple!!  Anyway....not trying to jump the gun, but I´m just really excited for them and I hope that things could work out :)  They are SO perfect together!

Also....Aunt Felice and Uncle Stan served in the islands?!!  What the cool?!  Do you know which part they served in?  Oh wow, that is hilarious!  I would love to talk to Aunt Felice more when I get back!

Also...Mal....Alex Smith is moving here?!!  Ahhh!!! That makes me SOO happy!  Oh wow....I am so excited!  That is so great!

Also, Mom...Idaho sounds like it was a blast.  And you got to meet Elder Tom Perry!!  Wow!  That is great!  I´m so happy for you!

Well....I´ve got to go!  There are so many more things I wish i had time to tell you, but know that I´m doing great!  I´m in the same area where hermana Nydegger started, so it´s been cool to make lots of connections with members here with her!

I know this is the Lord´s work and nothing is going to stop it.  I am so grateful for the Savior for what he has made possible for us.  I know that the only way to truly live happily is through living according to the principles of the Gospel.  We have a living prophet on the earth today who speaks for the Lord and directs his church on the earth.  That is such a blessing to know in this crazy world, we have SO much and where much is given much is required.  I am grateful to serve here and be apart of this life changing work.  I love you all so much!  have the best week ever!

Con mucho amor,
Hermana Carroll

Daniel's Baptism

2-23-15

Wow, what a wonderful and sacred week I have had.

Daniel got baptized!!!!!  He was SOO happy and excited :)  I can´t wait for Mom and Dad to meet him when you´re here.  He is such a sweet heart.  Everything went really well for the baptism.  At the end he bore such strong testimony.  We were so proud of him!  He has learned so much and has so many desires to tell everyone about what he knows now!  It is the sweetest thing!

Heavenly Father has truly blessed me.  I can´t even begin to describe all that I really feel in my heart, but I know that the Lord has blessed me with so many moments of revelation this week.  It has been so powerful.

We had the privilege of having Elder and Sister Dykes from the area presidency visit us this week for our mission tour!  And I forgot all of my notes today to write you, but I´ll do my best to write what I remember.

Elder Dykes is an incredible teacher and leader.  He truly teaches with the power of the Spirit!  He talked about ways in which we can be greater teachers, master teachers, just as the Savior was the master teacher.  His words inspired me.  He talked about how master teachers never make assumptions.  He gave us lots of techniques that we could use in our teaching to help us, but more than anything, how to really listen to people, and how to ask them inspired questions according to what they really need.  I admire great teachers!  Where would I be without the teachers in my life.  Not only my school teachers, piano and violin teachers, but gospel teachers and church leaders.  People who have taught me the gospel throughout my entire life, who have inspired me because of the Spirit they have carried. I learned that really the most important thing that we can ever do, despite our ability to teach well or not, is live worthy of the Spirit.  If the Spirit isn´t present, no matter what we say or do, no amount of effort we make to try and teach well can replace what the Spirit can teach, or how the spirit can touch our hearts.  Elder Dykes truly teaches by the Spirit and for that I am so grateful.  I was truly edified and uplifted and had so many desires to just be better after that meeting.

Then the next day, I had the opportunity to sit in on the Mission Council as Elder Dykes led our Council with all the zone leaders and sister training leaders!!  Wow, I can´t tell you enough how grateful I am that President Jackson allowed me to be there in such a personal counsel meeting.  I learned SO much!   I am so grateful for the leaders of the church and for all they do.  They have such a great responsibility, but I know they truly are called of God to lead and direct the affairs of the church on the earth and to hold the priesthood keys or channels of revelation and responsibility for the Lord on the earth.  My heart was full and my mind was enlighted.  He first started talking about Agency and how not only do we know that we are agents to act and not objects to be acted upon, but that we want our investigators to understand that THEY are agents to act and not objects to be acted upon as soon as possible!  I loved that!  This all stems back to learning how to become effective teachers....knowing how to help others learn what you know is not an easy task!  He then talked about Responsibility, how there are so many ways that people try to avoid taking responsibility in their lives....ways that people avoid responsibility are....they blame, they make excuses, they are prideful, they rationalize, they are fearful, the list could go on an on.  My mind was just so enlighted the entire time he talked about this.  This is absolutely true!  How many people do these things to avoid taking responsibility?  How many times do WE ourselves do these things to avoid taking responsibility?  It just made me realize the connection he was trying to make with all of this.  We have to help others understand that they have a choice, to take responsibility for their own lives for their own salvation.  And if we want them to understand the importance of taking responsibility for their actions, we ourselves must take responsibility for every area of our life if we are to truly be happy and live in harmony with God´s will for us.  Responsibility is huge in our choice to be agents unto our own selves.  The Lord wants us to choose for ourselves the good, but we have the choice....the choice to be responsible and exercise our agency and faith to do the Lord´s will...to face conflict and overcome our fears and pride with the right attitude.

He then moved on and connected responsibility with forgivness, with repentence, with charity, accountability.  Wow.  I wish I could just scan all of my notes and send them to you!  It touched my heart and helped me feel at peace.  I´m going to bring my notes next week so I can tell you more things!  I can´t believe I forgot my notes!  I especially loved what he talked about responsibility and forgiveness.  How many times are we offended and we don´t even realize it?  When we are offended, sometimes we feel justified for not forgiving the offense.  Maybe we are justified.  But....we are responsible for ourselves.  When we don´t forgive others, we give the offender control over us and we are not taking responsibility.  And we´re not allowing the Sacrament to cleanse us weekly.  I have never thought about that before in that way and that is what he focused on alot.  I wish I could even begin to phrase things in the way that he did, but I was just so grateful he talked about personal responsibility.  We really do have control over our own emotions and thoughts....sure we don´t have control over what happens to us or the actions of others, but we have the choice to choose to take responsibility for ourselves....that includes what we feel, think and do.  We are more happy when we take responsibility in every area of our life.  We must not allow the bad things that happen to us, do bad things to us.

Anyway, I know the Lord is aware of each of us, he´s aware of each of our circumstances and he wants to help us.  I know that as we truly live according to the principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we show the Lord that we want to take responsibility, we show him our faith, and we show that we want to be like him.  I am so grateful for the Savior, for his infinite and unconditional love.  We have every reason to rejoice and be happy because of our knowledge of the Savior and his restored Gospel on the earth!

I love you!  Have the best week ever!

Con mucho amor,
La Hermana Carroll

SEGOVIA!
